General info


How are the university libraries organized?

The University of Salerno has two central Libraries: the library of Humanities, Law and Economics (Biblioteca "E.R. Caianiello") and the Library of Science, both located on the campus of Fisciano. The Library of Medicine is located on the campus of Baronissi.


When are the libraries open?

Both central libraries are open Monday-Thursday 8.30 - 18.45, Fridays 8.30 - 17.00. The Loan office Monday - Thursday 9.00 - 12.30, Fridays 9.00 - 13.00 . The Library of Medicine is open - Mondays - Wednesdays and Fridays 9.00 - 14.00.

Who can use the libraries?

The libraries are open to the following  users:

a)  "Internal users": all members of the University of Salerno (academic and administrative staff, students, postgraduate research students registered for a PhD or similar qualification)

b)  "External users": anyone requesting the use of the Library for reading and research purposes. 


Do I need to register to use the libraries?

If you are an "internal user" you don't need to register.

If you are an "external user" and you need to borrow a book you have to register for an account at the Reference desk showing an ID card (driver's license and passport are accepted).


Can I use my laptop in the libraries?

Yes, you can use your laptop and, if you are an "internal user", you can also use the wireless network within the library with the password of your University account.

How do I borrow books?

Library "E.R. Caianiello":

The Library collections are open access for using and borrowing.

First find the book or item you are looking for by searching the catalogue and get the location and the area (for example 332.306 DIS 1 area economica). Then reach the room where the book is located, fill in the form and once you have got the item you were looking for, you can check out the item at the loan desk with your ID card


Library of Science:

The Library collections are stored in restricted access areas, so the items must be requested in advance and delivered to you by staff members.

Library staff is available aeach Loan Desk to help you.


How many items can I borrow?

The number of items you can borrow depends on the type of borrower you are:

"Internal users":

a.     Students, Erasmus students, PhD and postgraduate students, University staff : 2 items

b.     Researchers and professors: 5 items

"External users": 1 item


How long can I borrow items for?

You can borrow items for 30 days.


Can I renew items I have on loan?

No. Items cannot be renewed.


Are all items of the libraries available for borrowing?

Not all library items are available for loan.

Reference books (dictionary, encyclopedia, paper journals, yearbook etc.), paper journals, rare editions, special collections are not allowed outside the library. All items are available for consultation on site.


What happens if I am late in returning an item?

Any user not returning books on time will be disqualified from further loan for a period equivalent to the delay time.


What happens if I lose or damage a book?

Once the books are issued, they are the borrower's responsibility. In case of loss or  damage, you have to purchase the same edition of the book, or, if not available, the latest one.


Can I reserve a book?

If you are an "internal user", you can reserve a book currently on loan by someone else, signing in the Library catalogue with your University username and password. The service is currently restricted to the areas of Economics and Law.


How can I make fotocopies in the libraries?

You should buy a copy card in card dispensers and use the self-service copy machines located in various places round the libraries. The reproduction of Library material is allowed for study reasons and in conformity with the current copyright regulations.


What can I do if the libraries do not have the materials I need?

If you are an "internal user" (student preparing dissertation, postgraduate research students, academic staff) you may submit an Interlibrary Loan or Document delivery request.


What are the Interlibrary Loan (ILL) and the Document delivery (DD)?

The Interlibrary Loan and Document Delivery service helps you to recieve books   (ILL), books chapters and journal articles (DD) from other libraries. You may submit no more than two requests at a time and, if requested by the lending library, you will have to pay for any fees, such as costs for postage.


How can I suggest a book purchase for the libraries?

You can suggest books currently not available through the online form "ask a librarian" The Library Committee will decide about the possibility of the purchase.


I am doing research on a certain topic, can I ask the library to conduct the search through the catalogues and the databases and give me the results?

Yes, you can ask the library to conduct a search in our catalogue through online form "ask a librarian" or turn to reference desk and fill the paper form. If you want the library to conduct a search in our online databases you have to fill the on line form "documentation and bibliographic researches" The Library will send you an email with the results.


What is the Reference service?

This service covers a broad spectrum of information needs, such as finding quick answers to questions, using the online catalogue, locating library materials and information on specialized topics.


What is the European Documentation Center (CDE)?

It is a body designated by the European Commission collecting documents and publications of the European Union aimed at developing and promoting research on European integration. The CDE is located in the Library "E.R. Caianiello".


What is the Multimedia room?

The Multimedia room is located in the Library "E.R. Caianiello". It contains 10 computer workstations and a network printer allowing users to access the Internet and consult multimedia materials (databases, electronic journals, e-books, CD, DVD). You have to apply for an account with your USB flash drive.



Catalogue and research


How do I access the Library Catalogue?

Links to the Library Catalogue can be found on the Library Website homepage http://www.biblioteche.unisa.it/ You can also use computers within the libraries.


How do I use the catalogues to search for resources in the Libraries?

If you use the search box "tutti i campi" (all fields) in the basic search, you can enter one or more terms, for ex.  name of the author and  title of the book,  words of the title,  keywords (without using articles before the noun). You can also choose the multi-field, multi-base or advanced search, or use the facets to refine results by format type (books, serials, e-books, electronic resources, ancient books), language, publication date, area (Humanities, Economics, Law etc.)


How do I find journal articles?

Our libraries provide access to a large collection of journals, both in print and electronic formats. You can use the catalogue to search for a journal title and electronic databases to locate journal and newspaper articles, research reports, conference papers, book chapters and other resources related to specific subject areas. Many of our databases contain full-text resources.


Can I access the databases or look at journal articles in full-text from my house?

Yes, if you are a member of the University of Salerno, you can access our electronic resources from a remote location off-campus through proxy server. 


What is the Proxy Server?

It is an intermediary between you and the campus network. When you access the Library's electronic resources from a remote location off-campus the proxy service identifies your computer's IP address. The service provides a web page for you to enter your University username and password and authorizes your access to the resources. http://www.biblioteche.unisa.it/portale/servizi_proxy

  Can I use the Library from my smartphone or other Web-enabled mobile devices?

Yes. The Library has a free mobile application for Android. From Google Play search for "BiblioUnisa" and  download the app.


What is Ariel?

Ariel is an integrated catalogue connecting to local and remote resources through a single access point, therefore you can search the University catalogue and web databases with a single query.
