Central library E.R. Caianiello
The Central Library of the humanistic centre - dedicated to the physicist Eduardo Renato Caianiello (1921-1993) - was built in the 90s on a project, prepared by the Italposte technical office, signed by the Neapolitan architect Massimo Pica Ciamarra. It collects the book collections relating to the humanities, law and economic areas. It has over six hundred study stations, distributed in eighteen consultation rooms. The library collections are all organized according to the 'open shelf' system, which allows the user direct access to the books. The collection amounts to over 800,000 bibliographic units and over 6,383 periodicals (of which 2,167 are current). An important feature is the presence of donations, private and special collections, collected over years (especially during the decade 2005-2019), each of which has a dedicated sub-catalogue in the OPAC. Information resources in electronic format are constantly increasing: the library subscribes to a considerable number of databases, concerning various disciplinary areas, and is connected to many thousands of online periodicals, most of which can be consulted full-text with remote access .
Scientific and technological library
It was inaugurated on 3th May 2013. Built on a project by the Roman architect Nicola Pagliara, it is located inside the campus of Fisciano on a plot of over 2,000 square metres and has a total of eight floors, five of which are visible from the outside (including the access floor) whereas the other ones are underground. it has a total capacity of approx. 350,000 bibliographic units and collects the library collections already belonging to the libraries of the Departments of Mathematical, Physical and Natural Sciences, Engineering and Pharmacy. The confluence of private donations and library funds is equally considerable in this library. The entire collection, included in the University collective catalogue, is organised according to the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC). The user stations amount to 540, distributed in 7 consultation rooms. The library uses RFID (Radio Frequency IDentification) technology in order to control the book heritage and loan procedures.
Library of the Department of Medicine and Surgery
Inside the university campus of Baronissi there is a third library facility equipped with 40 study stations, specifically dedicated to the research and teaching needs of the Department of Medicine and Surgery. Very recently created, it collects a few thousand manuals and some newly acquired scientific magazines, as well as some private donations of mainly historical interest.
The information resources
The University Library System as a whole currently has considerable information resources - databases, periodicals, ebooks - which can be used online.
The University Libraries Portal allows structured access to documentary resources and services and indicates additional bibliographic research tools at national and international level (opac, metaopac, digital collections, etc.). Thanks to the implementation of a discovery tool (Primo of Ex Libris, in the Ariel customised version), all the resources belonging to remote and local collections (articles, books, magazines, e-books, digital objects, theses, bibliographic records and more) can be located and searched from a single access point.
The EleA portal (Electronic Archive for Academic Studies and Research), the open archive of the University of Salerno, is constantly expanding. Born as an institutional depository of the doctoral theses discussed in the University, available in full text on the web for free consultation, in implementation of the principles of the Berlin Declaration and the Declaration of Messina, it subsequently included some open access scientific publications and Salernum - Salerno digital library, a collection of documents and books of mainly Salernitan topic or production. Since 2012 EleA has been converging on Pleiadi, the Portal for the Italian Electronic Scientific Literature on Open Archives and Institutional Depots; it is also available on the major European open access platforms (such as OpenAire, OpenDoar, Roar).
Finally, as part of the MIUR 2013-2015 three-year programme, the University libraries, on the basis of an inter-university Convention, joined the SHARE (Scholarly Heritage and Access to Research) project, creating - together with the Federico II, L'Orientale , Parthenope and Suor Orsola Benincasa of Naples, Sannio, Basilicata and Salento Universities - a common platform for access to library services and sharing a Charter of library and documentary services.
Since 2017, the collections have been further enriched with the participation of the CBA in Media Library On Line (MLOL), the first Italian network of public, academic and school libraries for digital loan: users thus have at their disposal a selection of ebooks, audio and video resources, e-learning and much more, which can be accessed through a wide range of compatible devices (computers, e-readers, tablets, etc.).
