The University of Salerno is a member of Portico, the permanent archive of electronic academic literature, which guarantees the long-term preservation and accessibility of approximately 12,000 e-journals and 1 million e-books.

The project is made possible thanks to the active cooperation of over 600 major publishers and nearly a thousand libraries from different countries. There are 34 Italian institutions participating, including 25 universities. Launched in 2002 by Jstor, with a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the project since 2005 also receives support from Ithaka, the Library of Congress, the National Endowment for the Humanities (http://www.neh.gov /).
