Wikidata Wikiproject COVID-19

The Wikiproject COVID-19 was inaugurated on March 15, 2020, to keep track of articles related to COVID-19 published in Wikipedia, verify the external sources from which to draw data and curate a list of articles on the pandemic placed "under surveillance", that is, articles that can be updated only by experienced contributors and of which every change examined.

Currently the project gathers 180 users from different nations and professions who share a commitment to making Wikipedia an accurate and verifiable source of information about the pandemic.

A brother project was born in Wikidata, the database of Wikimedia of structured and free data. Thanks to the work of the participants (including many librarians), today it is possible to have access to a great amount of data on COVID-19 with an infinite possibility of queries .

The project has several objectives: firstly, the creation of specific data models for the standardization of the various types of items related to the epidemic (for example emergency measures, viral strains, apps created ad hoc, the effects and impact of the pandemic, etc.) Secondly, the plan provides for the creation and extension of elements, declarations, categories and templates that best describe everything relevant for the representation of the epidemic and the virus itself; the structure of queries SPARQL that allow precise statistics on coronavirus and the progress of the pandemic is also fundamental, followed by the monitoring and updating in real time of the pages related to outbreaks internationally and / or divided by country.

The Wikiproject task is also to ensure the quality of Wikidata's information on the scientific literature regarding coronavirus and to develop strategies to improve access to such information

The University Library Centre of the University of Salerno also participates in the Wikidata Wikiproject Covid 19, following various lines of action

Librarians identify the items of the most prolific authors who need to be expanded with identifiers, or qualified through sources or, again, linked with the "author" property to their scientific articles.

Authors are bound through their property to their scientific papers, and these statements are supported by bibliographical references automatically imported from external quality databases.

Another course of action is the subjection of scientific articles. Starting from the three queries SPARQL developed by the Wikiproject for the scientific articles related to the Coronavirus that the subject is missing , the related data are downloaded and, thanks to the use of specific tools, the main topic property is added.
